  • Symbol of the Iron CurtainThe alchemy of politics - greenery instead of wires (15.11.2009)
When Winston Churchill, while accepting an honorary doctorate at the University of Fulton in March 1946, called the situation in Europe The Iron Curtain, very few would have predicted that this idea would be a central issue in Europe’s existence for a long time. Roosevelt, Churchill, and Stalin agreed on The Iron Curtain at Yalta in 1945 – it represented the line that troops could not cross.

  • rbruckePaths across the large stream (15.11.2009)
What links the capital cities of Bratislava, Vienna, Budapest and Beograd? Even primary school students know it is the Danube. But the Danube also used to separate the cities. Only the first bridge brought the cities together. Along with the invention of the wheel, the discovery of how to get over a river was maybe one of the most useful in the history of mankind. Bridges have contributed to development and destruction as well. Traders and travellers, as well as armies and conquerors, have traversed bridges. In any case, bridges will forever be associated with overcoming obstacles and connecting two, often remote, banks...

  • Zdenka BeckerI am who I am … (14.11.2009)
This is the conclusion reached by the author, who was born in the Czech Republic, grew up in Slovakia and who has been living in Austria since 1975, in response to a remark addressed to her by a fellow Slovak writer at a reading from her latest work Dcéry Rózy Bukovskej (Róza Bukovská’s Daughters) organised by the Slovak writers association. Zdenka Beckerová does not fit any particular stereotype.

  • opusteny ostrovA deserted island certainly won’t remain isolated (30.7.2009)
This year the entire music world commemorates the great master of Viennese classical music, Joseph Haydn. Two days after the premiere (29 May 2009) of his chamber piece Deserted Island, 200 years will have passed since Haydn’s death. Art, drama, opera, and Joseph Haydn—these are what connect the SND with Esterházy Private Foundation. Similarly, Haydn’s work links Slovakia with Austria, and Bratislava with Eisenstadt.

  • November Revolution 1989Twenty years without border (10.3.2009)
Without border – the exhibition on the occasion of the 20th anniversary of the opening of the Eastern border and the foundation of KulturKontakt Austria (KKA) is accessible for free from March 5 to April 24, 2009 in the rooms of the Austrian Cultural Forum in Zelená Street in Bratislava.

  • Twin City Liner in BratislavaTwin City Liner wasn‘t the first... (24.2.2009)
From the history of ship transportation between Vienna and Bratislava.
The Danube. The second longest European river has been a phenomenon in the life of people living at its banks since time immemorial. It has had its name since the Roman times, when it created a natural northern border of the Roman Empire. Its Latin name is Danubius, but we also know its Greek name Ister. Let’s try to have a look now into a short geographic and historical part of the ship connection between Vienna and Bratislava.

  • over the age of 75...At sixty six, life is just beginning… (15.2.2009)
... this well-known song of Austrian singer and author Uda Jürgens invoked a taste of what awaits when you stop working: travelling, more time for your partner, playing with grandchildren, and at long last there will be more time to plan your day according to your will and mood.

  • Veit DenglerA man not content with mediocrity (1.5.2008)
Veit Dengler, who comes from a family of talented musicians, understood pretty early on that he would not be following in his parents’ footsteps because his musical talent would not be good enough. He hung up his violin and concentrated on what he did better than good: quick-thinking and understanding connections and analytical thinking. How to lead and motivate people. Nowadays at the age of 39 he runs the European Business Centre of Dell in Bratislava, one of the most successful foreign companies in Slovakia. We met up with Veit Dengler to interview him about the company Dell, but the focus soon turned also to his family and priorities in life.

  • Make Slovakia bigger! (30.3.2008)
These were the words of Professor Baumann from the University of Pardubice, appealing to participants of the conference entitled German as an Expert Foreign Language in Border Regions, which was held for the first time at the University of Economics in February 2008. He was chiefly referring to making the country’s potential more visible – “little Slovakia, both in a spiritual and economic sense”, but above all he was referring to creating a “virtual corridor” all the way to the German border. The core issue of the conference was the role of expert German in relevant border regions. We spoke to lectors of the German language Boris Blahak (Deutscher Akademischer Austauschdienst, DAAD) and Clemens Piber (Österreichisches Kulturforum) about the role of German as a foreign language in Slovakia and about their personal experiences with Slovakia.
  • Joachim ChenSafe parks tailor-made for the public (6.3.2008)
Recently Slovak experts and journalists were interested in a lecture given at Bratislava City Hall on the theme of Vienna City Parks. “The lecture is being given in connection with the Memorandum of Co-operation that was signed in June 2007 by the heads of city halls in Central European cities”, informed Executive Director of City Hall, Anna Pavlovičová, who officially opened the event. We put several questions to the lecturer, Joachim Chen from the Vienna Parks Department.

  • CarnuntumThe World of Authentic Roman Experiences (3.6.2007)
One of the most important Roman excavation sites in Central Europe is located between Vienna and Bratislava – the Carnuntum Archaeological Park. We talked to the Director of the park, Dr. Markus Wachter, about its importance and the potential of this open-air museum in the Twin City area for tourism.

  • PhDr. Jaroslava SchmidtováRenovation of the ancient Gerulata camp in Rusovce (3.6.2007)
The Gerulata Roman camp, a national cultural monument known as a “piece of Rome near Bratislava”, is currently undergoing some positive changes. Bratislava City Council’s Department of International Relations planned and carried out projects, financed from EU funds, which substantially contributed to the raised profile of the historic site. We discussed the results of the individual projects with Zuzana Lacková, manager of the Gerulata camp projects and Dr. Jaroslava Schmidtová, who is head of archaeological research in Rusovce and works at Bratislava City Museum.
