Slovak Moderne with collectors´ eyes

Slovak Moderne, Zmeták
Before 1989, art collecting had no big tradition in Slovakia. One of a few collectors was Albert Tešínský, who however moved his collection to Vienna, where it served as a basis for the Albertina. Extensive collections were in the possession of the noble families Pállfy, Török, Nyáry. After 1948, art collecting actually ceased to exist in Slovakia. Smaller private collections were established not until the early 1960s. The most important collector was Ernest Zmeták, who dedicated his extensive collection to the Art Gallery in Nové Zámky in 1980...

His most remarkable collection included works from the ancient times, through Gothic, Renaissance and Baroque, to the first half of the 20th century. Besides this collection there were some other private collections, for example the collections of Ivan Zubaľ, Ivan Melicherčík and Jan Kukal. The major collector of gothic art was Ivan Panenka.

In the course of time, other collections were established. Their owners devoted themselves not only to collecting activity, but staged public presentations and supported artists as well. Worth mentioning is the Linea Gallery of Ivan Zubaľ and his sons or the Milan Dobeš Museum and the Komart Gallery, which are focused on constructivism. Another collection was established by the First Slovak Investment Group. Dutch collector Gerhard H. Meulensteen founded the Modern Art Museum Danubiana, another collection of high quality is in the possession of the Zoya Gallery, which recently opened a new exclusive gallery in Dubová near Modra.

The establishment of several auction companies, through which many collectors enhanced their collections, also contributed to the development of collecting activity. An extensive and high-quality collection is owned by the auction company Soga.

In January 2007, we presented works of private collectors from the period 1957 – 1970, now we present works from the last decade of the 19th century to the year 1948. Most works were never presented to the public before. The artists of the exhibition include Konštantín Bauer, Juraj Collinásy, Július Jakoby, Ervín Semian, Gejza Csobel, Arnold Weiss-Kubinčan, Antonín Jasusch, František Reichentál and others.
